VATICAN CITY - Two images of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger stood in sharp relief during the mourning period for the pope he would eventually succeed. With his wispy silver hair blowing in the wind, the German prelate stood before the world's political and spiritual leaders at John Paul II's funeral April 8 and offered an eloquent, sensitive farewell that moved some to tears.

Ten days later — just before Ratzinger and 114 other cardinals entered the conclave to select the 265th pontiff — he delivered a sharp-edged homily on strict obedience to church teachings that left liberal Catholics wincing.

"He could be a wedge rather than a unifier for the church," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, editor of the Jesuit weekly magazine America.

This was clear in St. Peter's Square moments after the announcement of Ratzinger's election and the name chosen by the first Germanic pope in 1,000 years: Benedict XVI. Amid the applause were groans and pockets of stunned silence.

"It's Ratzinger," French pilgrim Silvie Genthial, 52, barked into her cellular phone before hanging up.

"We were all hoping for a different pope — a Latin American perhaps — but not an ultraconservative like this," she said.

But others hugged and toasted the new pope with red wine. "A clear and true voice of faith," said Maria Piscini, an 80-year-old Italian grandmother, raising a paper cup filled with pinot noir.

The cardinals who selected him knew it would be received this way.

Perhaps no member of the conclave evoked such potent opinions — and has stirred more arguments — as the 78-year-old Ratzinger and the role he's held since 1981: head of the powerful Vatican office that oversees doctrine and takes action against dissent.

"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires," he said Monday in a pre-conclave Mass in memory of John Paul. The church, he insisted, must defend itself against threats such as "radical individualism" and "vague religious mysticism."

As prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, he was the Vatican's iron hand.

His interventions are a roll call of flashpoints for the church: the 1987 order stripping American theologian the Rev. Charles Curran of the right to teach because he encouraged dissent; crippling Latin Americans supporting the popular "liberation theology" movement for alleged Marxist leanings; coming down hard on efforts to rewrite Scriptures in gender inclusive language.

He also shows no flexibility on the church's views on priestly celibacy, contraception and the ban on ordinations for women.

In 1986, he denounced rock music as the "vehicle of anti-religion." In 1988, he dismissed anyone who tried to find "feminist" meanings in the Bible. Last year, he told American bishops that it was allowable to deny Communion to those who support such "manifest grave sin" as abortion and euthanasia.

He earned unflattering nicknames such as Panzercardinal, God's rottweiler, and the Grand Inquisitor. Cartoonists emphasized his deep-set eyes and Italians lampooned his pronounced German accent.

"Indeed, it would be hard to find a Catholic controversy in the past 20 years that did not somehow involve Joseph Ratzinger," John Allen, a Vatican reporter for the National Catholic Register, wrote six years ago.

But among conservatives, he rose in stature. An online fan club sings his praises and offers souvenirs with the slogan: "Putting the smackdown on heresy since 1981."

Even John Paul apparently needed him close by. Several times Ratzinger said he tendered his resignation because of his age, but each time it was rejected by the pope.

In recent years, he took on issues outside church doctrine. He once called Buddhism a religion for the self-indulgent. In an interview with the French magazine Le Figaro last year, he suggested Turkey's bid to join the Europe Union conflicted with Europe's Christian roots — a view that could unsettle Vatican attempts to improve relations with Muslims.

"Turkey has always represented a different continent, in permanent contrast to Europe," he was quoted as saying.

In a book released last week, "Values in a Time of Upheavals," Ratzinger also called demands for European "multiculturalism" as a "fleeing from what is one's own."

"If he continues as pope the way he was as a cardinal, I think we will see a polarized church," said David Gibson, a former Vatican Radio journalist and author of a book on trends in the church. "He has said himself that he wanted a smaller, but purer, church."

Critics complain Ratzinger embodies all the conservative instincts of the last papacy, but without John Paul's charisma and pastoral genius.

"I think this is the closest the church can come to human cloning," quipped Gibson.

It's a joke not too far off the mark.

Both John Paul II and his successor were forged by the horrors of World War II and advanced in the church in the shadow of the Iron Curtain. They also shared a deep drive to try to use Christianity as a grand unifier for the continent following the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

But the Polish pontiff came from a nation that suffered greatly during the war. Ratzinger — like many from his generation — carries the burdens and ghosts of Germany's past.

Raised in the oak forest and pine foothills of Bavaria, he said he was enrolled in Hitler's Nazi youth movement against his will. At the same time, the policeman's son entered seminary studies in 1939 as a 12-year-old with "joy and great expectations," according to his memoirs.

He recalled being deeply moved by the rituals of the church, such as candlelight services and midnight Mass.

But in 1943, he was drafted as an assistant to a Nazi anti-aircraft unit in Munich. Later, he was shipped off to build tank barriers at the Austian-Hungarian border. He wrote that he escaped recruitment by the dreaded SS because he and others said they were training to be priests.

"We were sent out with mockery and verbal abuse," he wrote. "But these insults tasted wonderful because they freed us from the threat of that deceitful `voluntary service' and all its consequences."

He deserted in April 1945 and returned home to Traunstein. It was a risky move, since deserters were shot or hanged. But the Third Reich was collapsing.

"The Americans finally arrived in our village," he wrote. "Even though our house lacked all comfort, they chose it as their headquarters."

Ratzinger was identified as a deserter and placed in prisoner of war camp near Ulm in southern Germany. He wrote that he could see the spires of the city's cathedral in the distance.

"It was, for me, like a consoling proclamation of the indescribable humaneness of faith," he wrote.

He and his older brother, Georg, were ordained in 1951. He taught theology and earned a reputation as a forward-looking prelate and took part in the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, a major attempt to modernize the faith.

His doctoral dissertation on the medieval theologian St. Bonaventure tried to draw attention to "dangerous relativism" — a message that he echoed at Mass on Monday.

He also tried to combine his belief in Christianity's ecumenical message with his views on the special role of Judaism.

"That the Jews are connected with God in a special way and that God does not want that bond to fail is entirely obvious," he wrote in his book, "God and the World," published in 2000. "We wait for the instant in which Israel will say `yes' to Christ, but we know that it has a special mission in history now."

"First and foremost, he's a theologian. He's an intellectual," said the Rev. Martin Bialas, who has known Ratzinger for 35 years and was his student. "By nature, he's someone who prefers to stay in the background."

In 1977, Ratzinger was appointed bishop of Munich and elevated to cardinal three months later by Pope Paul VI. He was one of only two cardinals in the latest conclave that was not chosen by John Paul.

The name he took — Benedict — draws a connection to Benedict XV, the Italian pontiff from 1914 to 1922 who had the difficult task of providing leadership for Catholic countries on opposite sides of World War I. His declared neutrality, and his repeated protests against weapons like poison gas angered both sides.

Benedict was also known for reaching out to Muslims and for efforts to close the nearly 1,000-year estrangement with Christian Orthodox churches — a possible signal that this could be an important priority of the new papacy.

"The name Benedict XVI leaves the possibility open for a more moderate policy," said the Swiss theologian Hans Kueng, whose license to teach theology was revoked by the Vatican in 1979. "Let us, therefore, give him a chance. As with the president of the USA, we should allow a new pope 100 days to learn."

But Kueng already has formed his judgment: "An enormous disappointment for all those who hoped for a reformist and pastoral pope."

His first major test could be in August in his homeland. World Youth Day — a favorite event of John Paul — is scheduled in the city of Cologne and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of young Catholics.

"Pope John Paul II always said that we must have a new beginning, a new evangelization of Europe that will plant the seeds of belief in the hearts of people again," said Philip Hockerts, spokesman for the Regensburg diocese in southern Germany. "It could well be that (Benedict XVI) wants to carry forth this new evangelizing."

Perpetuation of women’s multiple burden
In this regard, it cannot be forgotten that the interrelationship between these two activities ­ family and work ­ has, for women, characteristics different from those in the case of men. Women who freely desire will be able to devote the totality of their time to the work of the household without being stigmatized by society or penalized financially, while those who wish also to engage in other work may be able to do so with an appropriate work-schedule, and not have to choose between relinquishing their family life or enduring continual stress, with negative consequences for one's own equilibrium and the harmony of the family.

How the four-day work week ruined my dance class sched: Some notes on globalization and labor

Shit! Na-delete ang previous post ko. Nag-operation timed out. Diretso ko na kasing tina-type dito sa create post kesa isulat muna sa Word. That way, dire-diretso ang thoughts ko with little room for self-editing. Iyon naman talaga ang pinagsusumikapan ko. Dagdag pa yung insight ni Ma'am Carol Sobritchea ng UP Center for Women's Studies noong nagsalita siya sa book launching dito sa UP Manila na there is a new way of feminist editing daw. Iyon ay wag masyadong pakialaman ang sinulat ng women writers. That way, litaw na litaw kung ano mang kaalaman o ideya na nais i-impart ng mga kababaihang ito. Reminds me also of the book, "Women's Ways of Knowing," by Belenky et al. Dahil ang kaalaman ay tradisyonal na monopolyo ng kalalakihan, kailangan namang mas palitawin ang boses ng kababaihan.

So ang gagawin ko na lang sa susunod ay cut and paste the entire entry to Word then save para siguradong me back up.

Anyway, isusulat ko na lang as separate entry yung ginawa ko kanina. I should take it as a sign from God since that entry is about God. Baka sabihin it is an affront to the conservatism of the Catholic Church.

This one is more urgent at baka hindi ma-capture agad kung later ko na isusulat. As I am to click submit post (referring to my previous deleted post), me dumating na memo about the implementation of the 4-day work week in the university starting next week. Ngayong summer lang naman daw para makapagtipid sa konsumo ng kuryente. Actually, yung ibang government agencies ay nagsimula na this week.

The memo said work hours will be from 7:30am-6:30pm. My first reaction, patay, paano ang dance class ko? 7-8 pm yun e sa Pantranco pa so mala-late kami kung 6:30 pa lang kami aalis dito. Sayang naman ang binayad namin kung lagi kaming late, di ba? So sabi ko ke Kristine, gawa na lang kami ng letter requesting na mas maaga ng 30 minutes kami uuwi. Besides, 2 days lang naman ang hinihingi namin. Ewan kung papayagan. Good luck sa amin. Saka baka i-trivialize at sabihin na, "Dance class lang naman yan! Bakit nyo pa pagkakaabalahan?" Aba, hindi yan ang isyu.

Ang isyu ay, ano na namang pakana itong 4-day work week na ito? Ito ba ang magiging sagot sa patuloy na pagtaas ng konsumo ng kuryente ng UP at ng buong ahensya ng gobyerno? Ang sagot ay ang tuluyang pagbuwag ng Oil Deregulation Law na nagpapahirap sa mga Pilipino! Sobra na ang maya't mayang pagtaas ng presyo ng gasolina. Laging sinisisi ng oil companies ang pagtaas ng presyo ng krudo sa world market. Minsan may konsolasyon naman na rollback. Pero wala pa rin itong panama sa mas maraming beses na oil price hike. At sinasabi nila na nalulugi sila? Hindi sila nalulugi! Kaya sumama na sa welgang bayan sa Lunes! Sabi nga ng FX driver kahapon, ang panawagan nila ay hindi pagtaas ng pamasahe dahil alam nila ang idudulot nito sa bulsa ng mga mamamayan. Ang panawagan nila ay tuluyan nang buwagin ang oil deregulation law.

Sa usapin ng paggawa, halatang halata na pinagwa-warm up na tayo ng gobyerno sa pangmalawakang flexibilization sa paggawa although laganap na rin naman ito sa parehong pampubliko at pampribadong sektor. Ang 4-day workweek ay halimbawa ng flexibilization. Ang iba pa ay pagha-hire ng part-time, casual at contractual workers, subcontracting, multi-skilling/job rotation, reduced work hours at marami pang iba. Sa ganitong sitwasyon, nate-threaten ang job security ng mga manggagawa. Kaunti o wala silang nakukuhang social benefits. Nagkakaroon din ito ng epekto sa kanilang kalusugan.

Job insecurity. Sa 4-day work week, paano na ang mga sumusweldo ng arawan? Sabi ni Arroyo, hindi maaapektuhan ang mga regular na empleyado. E paano sa hinaharap? Nakasisiguro pa rin ba sila? E kung kami ngang mga casual ay dapat arawan na rin ang pasweldo. Under this scheme, babayaran ka sa kung ilang araw ang pinasok mo. Pag nataon na holiday, hindi iyon saklaw sa bayad. Buti na nga lang at napakiusapan ni dating Pangulong Nemenzo ang DBM na hindi muna kami isali sa scheme na iyon. Ngunit hanggang kailan?


Konektado rin ito sa sinasabi ni Arroyo na holiday economics. Pag dineklarang walang pasok dahil sa holiday, iuurong ito ng Biyernes o Lunes para magkaroon ng long weekend. sa gayon daw ay magkaroon ng panahon ang mga empleyado para sa kanilang pamilya, mag-stay sa bahay o makapagbakasyon. E ano namang gagastahin namin sa pagbabakasyon? Tumaas na lahat, pamasahe, bilihin.

Seguridad. Kung 7-6 o 7:30-6:30 ang pasok, delikado sa daan lalo na yung mga manggagaling pa sa karatig-probinsya. Sa umaga, sympre madilim dilim pa. Natatandaan nyo yung babae na pinatay sa Guadalupe station? Sobrang aga pa non, 5am ata. Yung kilala ko ring teacher sa nursing, aba, 7am na-snatch yun a. Sa pag-uwi naman, syempre mas gagabihin na kesa sa dati. Okay, given na hindi na talaga safe sa mga panahong ito. Pero mas lalong nakaamba sa panganib ang mga manggagawa sa bagong sched na ito.

Workers' productivity (occupational health hazard). Nakasaad sa isang pag-aaral na walong oras lang ang kayang itagal ng pagtatrabaho ng isang tao. Paglampas doon ay bababa na ang kanyang productivity, magiging restless at iritable. Ano ang maasahan nating output sa 10 oras na pagbababad sa trabaho? Of course, mamimilosopo na naman ang iba na hindi naman buong panahon na yon ay nakalaan sa trabaho. Syempre may lunch break, yung iba may coffee/yosi break. Yung iba naman daw hindi agad magtatrabaho pagdating sa opisina kundi makikipagkwentuhan, magi-Internet o tutulog. Lame excuse. Ang punto ay dapat isaalang alang hindi lang ang ating physical kundi mental at physiological.

Gender division of labor at home. Sa ganitong iskedyul, mas maagang gigising si nanay para ipaghanda ng umagahan ang kanyang mga anak. Sa gabi naman, dali-dali syang uuwi para makapagluto ng hapunan. Dahil sya ang inaasahan sa mga gawaing bahay, mas lalong bibigat ang kanyang pasanin. Walang problema, patulungin ang asawa at mga anak. Ngunit ilan lang bang pamilya ang ganito? Kalimitan, pag ang mag-asawa ay parehong nagtatrabaho, si Mister ay pagod na raw mula sa buong araw na trabaho at kailangan nang magpahinga at manood ng PBA samantalang si Misis ay kailangan pang magluto.

Sabi pa sa memo, required ang mga units na magsumite ng report kung talagang nakatipid sila. Dito pagbabasehan kung tuluyan nang i-implement ang four-day work week sa regular na semestre. Uh-oh. Warm-up pa lang talaga ito. Kumbaga, sinasanay at kinukundisyon na tayo bago tuluyang i-systematize ang scheme na ito.

Para doon sa iba na hindi pa masyadong gamay ang ibig sabihin ng globalisasyon, ito na ang globalisasyon. Dikta ng IMF-WB na magkaroon ng flexibilization para makatipid at para makabayad tayo sa ating utang panlabas. Dikta ito ng MNCs at TNCs para makatipid sa labor costs at maging mas competitive sa world market. Tayong mga mangagawa ang sinasakripisyo upang may maibayad sa utang na yan. Tayo ang sinasakripisyo para mas lumaki ang kita ng mga kapitalista.

Kung lilimiin, parang nagsimula lang sa maliit na isyu. Ayoko ng 4-day work week kasi masasagasaan ang dance class ko. Pero may mas malaki pang isyu at sila ay magkakaugnay.

Sana ay aprubahan ang aming request na makaalis ng mas maaga tutal dalawang araw lang naman. Sa Lunes nga pala ay welgang bayan. Kasali kaya ang All-UP? Makasama nga.

Talumpati ni Ginang Glenda Mazon-Barcelona

(Punong Tagapagsalita sa Pagtatapos ng mga Mag-aaral sa Mababang Paaralan ng Silonay, ika- 30 ng Marso, 2005)

Sa ating punong-guro _____, punong barangay Venecio Vergara, mga guro, mga barangay kagawad, mga panauhin at kaibigan, mga magulang, mga ka-barangay, at higit sa lahat, sa mga mag-aaral ng Mababang Paaralan ng Silonay na magtatapos sa umagang ito, isang magandang umaga.

Marso taong 19__, ako rin ay nagsalita sa paaralang ito, sa aking barangay na sinilangan, sa harap ng aking mga kamag-aral at mahal sa buhay, pagkatapos gawaran ng pinakamataas na parangal sa mga magsisipagtapos sa taong iyon.

Ngayon, __ taon ang nakaraan, nandirito uli ako sa entablado at nagtatalumpati bilang produkto ng kapita-pitagang institusyon na ito, bilang ina ng aking dalawang anak na kapwa nag-aaral dito, at bilang kinatawan ng ating pamayanan.

Masasabi kong isa sa mahalagang bahagi ng aking buhay ay ginugol ko sa paaralang ito. Ito nga raw ay itinuturing na pangalawang tahanan, kumanlong, pumanday at naghanda sa amin upang maging mag-aaral ng buhay.

Mga minamahal kong mag-aaral, hindi na kailangang sambitin pa na ang edukasyon ay mahalaga sa pagseguro ng inyong magandang kinabukasan. Mga magulang, hindi na kailangang sabihin pa na ang edukasyon ang siyang inyong tanging maipamamana sa inyong mga anak.

Ngunit ang realidad ay malaking bahagdan pa rin ng populasyon ang hindi nakakapag-aral o kaya naman ay hindi nakatapos ng pag-aaral. Sadyang laganap na ang kahirapan. Lagi nating naririnig sa mga usap-usapan, kawawa naman si ganito at hindi nakapagtapos, hindi tuloy makahanap ng magandang trabaho.

O kaya naman, sayang naman si ganito, pinapag-aral na nga ay ayaw pa. Tamad kasi, sinayang ang oportunidad na dumating sa kanya. Ang realidad ay libu-libong mga kabataan ngayon, kahit na yaong mga nakapagtapos sa mga pangunahing pamantasan sa bansa, ay nahihirapang makahanap ng trabaho at ni walang trabaho na nakalaan para sa kanila.

O kaya naman ay ito, “Akalain mo yun. High school graduate lang si ganito ngunit umasenso sa buhay at nakapag-abroad. Nakakapagpadala na ng pera sa magulang, pinaayos ang bahay at nakabili pa ng DVD player at tv.” Naitatanong tuloy natin sa ating mga sarili, “Edukasyon nga ba ang susi sa pagkakaroon ng maalwang buhay?”

Tunay na hindi matatawaran ang kontribusyon ng edukasyon. Ito raw ang pasaporte sa tagumpay, sa pagkakaroon ng maganda at permanenteng pagkakakitaan at kaalinsunod nito ang pagbibigay-ganansya sa mga pangangailangan ng pamilya. Malaking bahagi ng kultura nating mga Pilipino ang konsepto ng utang na loob lalung-lalo na sa pamilya. Kaya naman, gagawin natin ang lahat makapagpadala lang ng tulong pinansyal sa ating mga magulang o mapag-aral ang ating mga anak at kapatid.

Ngunit paano kung hindi mo matupad ang iniatas na responsibilidad ng pamilya? Paano kung hindi mo matupad ang ekspektasyon ng pamilya, ng lipunan? Mga minamahal kong mag-aaral, hindi lamang sa diploma nasusukat ang inyong pagkatao. Ngunit hindi ko naman sinasabi na huwag na kayong mag-aral.

Sinasabi ko sa inyo, hindi ninyo man mapagtanto ngayon, sinisiguro kong pag nasa labas na kayo ng paaralan, pag andon na kayo sa mas malawak na tunggalian ng buhay, saka nyo mapapahalagahan ang mga natutunan ninyo sa paaralan. Kaya sa ganito kaagang bahagi ng inyong buhay, nawa ay matutunan ninyong pasalamatan na nakapag-aral pa kayo. Nawa ay inyong pahalagahan ang panahong ginugugol ninyo sa apat na sulok ng inyong paaralan, sa mga guro na walang pagod na nagbabahagi ng kanilang kaalaman at sa inyong mga kapwa mag-aaral na marahil ay may mabubuo na pang-habangbuhay na pagkakaibigan at relasyon.

Hindi lamang Math, Science at English ang inyong dapat matutunan kung hindi ang mga values na gagabay sa inyong paglaki.
